Vigils Held Across WI, Investigation Continues

The intersection in Madison of last week’s deadly shooting by a local police officer has become a gathering spot for local activism.

Residents continue leaving flowers, notes and artwork to remember 38-year-old Corey Ruiz, who was shot and killed last Wednesday during a struggle with Madison police officers.  City officials say Williamson and South Baldwin Streets has been closed off until further notice.  The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation is reviewing evidence before forwarding the case to the Dane County District Attorney for a charging decision.  In Milwaukee, a vigil was held yesterday to honor Ruiz.  Milwaukee was the scene two years ago when police officers shot and killed Sam Sharpe during the 2024 Republican National Convention.
