In 1804, Aaron Burr, the third Vice President of the United States, shot former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton to death in their infamous duel at Weehawken, New Jersey.
In 1914, Babe Ruth made his major league debut with the Boston Red Sox.
In 1934, the government appointed the first seven commissioners to the newly created Federal Communications Commission.
In 1944, Franklin Roosevelt announced he will run for a fourth term as President of the United States.
In 1955, the United States Air Force Academy was dedicated in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In 1960, the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee was published.
In 1977, the Presidential Medal of Freedom was awarded posthumously to late civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 1989, British actor Laurence Olivier died at the age of 82. Olivier’s numerous film roles include “Othello,” “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,” and “Spartacus.”
In 2006, explosions rocked packed commuter trains in Mumbai, India, killing at least 135 people and injuring 300 others. Pakistan’s leaders strongly condemned the terror attack.
In 2006, more than 150 people were taken to the hospital after a Chicago subway train derailed sparking a fire in the tunnel. Authorities said most of the injured were suffering from smoke inhalation.
In 2007, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” the fifth installment of the successful “Harry Potter” film franchise opened in theaters nationwide.
In 2007, Lady Bird Johnson, widow of former President Lyndon Johnson died on this date at the age of 94. The Head Start program and her work with her husband in the war on poverty were among her many accomplishments. Lady Bird Johnson’s legacy also included a love of nature and bringing to the spotlight the importance of conserving the environment.
In 2008, heart surgery pioneer Dr. Michael DeBakey died on this date at the age of 99. DeBakey was renowned for developing bypass techniques and his patients included a number of world leaders and celebrities. DeBakey also benefited from a procedure he developed during his own surgery for a damaged aorta two years earlier.
In 2014, LeBron James told “Sports Illustrated” he’d be going back to the Cleveland Cavaliers after a successful run with the Miami Heat.
In 2015, a U.S. Drone Strike killed an ISIS Leader in Afghanistan.
In 2015, Serena Williams won her sixth Wimbledon title. The American tennis star beat Spain’s Garbine Muguruza. It’s Williams’ 21st major championship. She held all four major titles at the same time.
In 2015, Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán escaped from a maximum-security prison west of Mexico City via a specially constructed tunnel from his cell to a nearby house.
In 2016, Tim Duncan announced he would be retiring after 19 seasons and five NBA championships with the San Antonio Spurs.
In 2019, the last Volkswagen Beetle cars were produced. This ended the car’s 80 year run.
In 2024, actress Shelley Duvall died at the age of 75. Her credits include the films “Popeye,” “The Shining,” and “Doctor Sleep.”
