Inauguration Day in America

Inauguration Day in America

It is a day that has been part of American history since the beginning. Inauguration Day. But, it will not look the same as events in the past.

Today’s inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden will reportedly be the most secure event in U.S. history.

Over 20-thousand National Guard members are positioned throughout Washington, DC, after the FBI warned of threats in the city following the Capitol riot earlier this month.  The Secret Service has expanded the restricted area for drivers, and 13 DC metro stations will be closed.

Biden will be sworn-in on the west front of the U.S. Capitol at noon, Eastern time.  Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will also take the oath of office.

The National Mall usually attracts large crowds on Inauguration Day but will be mostly empty due to tight security and coronavirus restrictions.  Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are expected to attend the Inauguration, along with outgoing VP Mike Pence.  President Trump will head to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida this morning after a farewell ceremony at Joint Base Andrews.

NBC’s Tracie Potts reports Biden is looking forward while Trump celebrates his administration’s accomplishments.
