Contact Tracing Hits Snag, UW Madison to Suspend Students for Violations

A University of Wisconsin’s health official says many people aren’t eager to participate in COVID-19 contact tracing efforts.

UW’s Chief Health Quality Officer, Doctor Jeff Pothof says not even a third of those who test positive are willing to work with contact tracers.  He says the only way to help during the public health emergency is to be honest with contact tracers.  Doctor Pothof says some don’t want to reveal how they got COVID-19 because they caught it while not complying with public health guidelines.

When it comes to that behavior, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is suspending students for violating public health mandates.

Yesterday Dean of Students Christina Olstad said 14-students out of 450-under investigation are being referred for emergency suspension for health violations.  Nine campus student organizations are also under investigation. Olstad says any student who violates UW’s public health expectations will suffer serious consequences as laid out in the Badger Pledge.
