Good morning and welcome to your weekend. As we navigate 2020 and live our own history, here is a peek back to other things that happened on this day:
JUNE 27TH:
In 1971, New York City’s Fillmore East closed. The landmark hosted many of the major rock groups of the 1960’s.
In 1975, popular singing duo Sonny and Cher divorced.
In 1991, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall announced his retirement. Marshall was the first African-American to sit on the nation’s highest court.
In 2001, screen legend Jack Lemmon died at the age of 76.
In 2005, a split decision was handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court on the legality of Ten Commandments displays in public places. The high court ruled that it is unconstitutional to post framed copies of the Ten Commandments in courthouses. But the justices also said it was okay to have a Ten Commandments monument on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol. Part of the distinction between the two rulings is based on the intent of government officials and whether the displays conveyed a religious message.
In 2016, the “Happy Birthday” song entered the public domain, making it free to use in movies, in restaurants, and anywhere else in public.
