There is a good chance a lot of school kids in Wisconsin will be learning from home this fall.
The state’s Department of Public Instruction yesterday released 87 pages of recommendations for reopening schools. The proposal starts with a warning that the coronavirus will be an issue for the next year to year-and–a-half, and the note that schools need to be ready for it.
There are four recommendations for reopening schools: A four day week, two-days in the classroom and three days at home, alternating weeks, and a proposal to have elementary school kids go to school while teaching junior high and high schoolers from home.
Ultimately, local districts will have to make their own decisions.
Here locally, school leaders in the Chippewa Valley are impressed with the thoroughness of the plan from the state to reopen schools. But there are some unanswered questions. Eau Claire Superintendent Mary Ann Hardebeck yesterday said some families might have a hard time if their kids are learning from home for another semester. Altoona Superintendent Ron Walsh says it’s good that DPI is looking to return to school safely.
