COVID-19 CLIFF NOTES: 03.26.2020

Here we are nearing the end of another week, and no doubt this will bring a new set of information to dissect when it comes to the Coronavirus pandemic. But, as we are taking each day together we will let you know the latest, laid out in simple form. Your Covid-19 Cliff Notes are here.

As we follow the latest of the world pandemic, there is a lot (A LOT!) of information to digest, we will break it down from the larger (World) scope and work our way in here to Eau Claire and our own back yard and day to day lives. Trying to outline the basics and keep the information accurate, bite size, and easy to follow.

First of all, COVID19 is the name given to COronaVIrus Disease 2019, for the year that it was first detected. Now that we have that established we will look at the latest cliff notes.

WORLD NOTES

WORLD: Russia is grounding all international flights after recording its biggest one-day spike in coronavirus cases.  Russia reported 163 new cases Wednesday, bringing its total to 658.  Airlines will still be allowed to fly to other countries to bring back Russian citizens.  Russia closed its borders to foreigners last week and limited flights to and from the European Union earlier this month.

NATIONAL NOTES

NATIONAL: The coronavirus pandemic has hit a grim milestone in the U.S.  NBC News reports more than a thousand people in this country have now died from the virus.  Johns Hopkins University, which also is tracking COVID-19 cases, put the number at a thousand-50 as of around 2:30 a.m. Eastern Time today.  There have been more than 68-thousand-100 cases reported in the U.S. since the outbreak began.

The numbers on unemployment claims are set to come out this morning and let’s just say all signs point to things being very bad.  Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the experts are forecasting more than a million first-time claims for jobless benefits when the numbers come out at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

STATE NOTES

STATE:  As Wisconsin’s coronavirus count closes-in on 600 confirmed cases, public health managers say more than 10-thousand people have been confirmed as not sick. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday confirmed that 585 people in the state are sick with the virus. Seven people have died from it. But thousands more have been tested and cleared. DHS confirmed two new deaths yesterday, one in Milwaukee County and the other in Dane County.

LOCAL:  Eau Claire’s city manager says people need to be there for each other, but still need to maintain some social distance. City Manager Dale Peters yesterday said we are a community, and encouraged people to help their neighbors. But Peters said people also need to abide by the rules of Governor Evers’ Safer at Home order, and keep crowds to under 10 people and maintain some distance so as not to spread the coronavirus.
