WI POLITICAL CLIFF NOTES: TAKING A “QUACK” AT LAME DUCK LAWS

GOP lawmakers are asking the appeals court to reverse a ruling that stops a series of lame duck laws which limit the powers of Democratic Governor Tony Evers.

On Thursday, Dane County Circuit Court Judge Richard Niess blocked the series of laws passed by Republicans in a lame-duck session in December.  A lawyer for GOP lawmakers says the ruling “is already causing serious harm to our state” and could undermine over 300 other laws and resolutions spanning the last 40 years.  The judge ruled that the actions taken during the lame-duck session were unconstitutional.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is rescinding 82 appointees who were approved under the December lame-duck session.  A spokeswoman for Evers said those seats are now considered vacant and the Governor is committed to filling them as soon as possible.  Former Governor Scott Walker approved the 82 appointees whose offers were rescinded.  Some of the posts that need to be filled now are a University of Wisconsin System regent and a commissioner of the state Public Service Commission.
