WASHINGTON GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN IMPACTS WISCONSIN

Researchers at Wisconsin universities say the partial government shutdown is affecting their work.  The gridlock has stopped new research awards, blocked the hiring of graduate assistants, postponed supply purchases, and disrupted reimbursement payments for projects already begun.  At least one campus has suspended a course set to be taught by a federal government employee.

Wisconsin farmers say the partial government shutdown is impacting prices, loans, and aid programs.  Lack of federal data is hurting growers’ abilities to market their products.  Newer farms and those with late harvest are affected the most because they rely more heavily on government loans.  Officials say 25-hundred employees are being recalled to work at the USDA for a few days to process existing loans.
